About Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a groundbreaking, evidence-based model of psychotherapy that offers an intuitive and empowering method to understand human complexities.
IFS is also recognized as a powerful approach within trauma-informed mental health care, particularly for individuals navigating depression, anxiety, grief, and complex trauma.
As a therapist supporting young adults and adults in Victoria, BC, I use IFS to gently explore and work with the parts of you that may carry the weight of long-term emotional pain, relational wounds, or challenging life transitions. This deeply attuned and compassionate approach often complements the themes we address in trauma therapy, offering space for meaningful healing and self-understanding.
How Can IFS Benefit You?
Self-Awareness: Dive deep into understanding the distinct personalities within you.
Conflict Resolution: Harmonise internal conflicts affecting your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours
Emotional Healing: Compassionately address and heal past traumas and wounds
Empowerment: Reinforce your core Self to lead and guide your internal family
IFS can also be integrated with other approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy when appropriate. For many clients, including those facing eating disorders, complex trauma, or unresolved grief, IFS offers a softer, more compassionate entry point into therapy. Many people explore IFS as part of their broader individual therapy journey, especially when they’re seeking a deeper understanding of emotional patterns that feel stuck or overwhelming.

How Does IFS Work?
The Multiplicity of Mind
Protectors and Exiles
- Protectors: These are like our bodyguards. They take on roles to shield us from harm, manage our responses to the world, and often appear as behaviours meant to control or divert attention from pain.
- Exiles: These parts are deeply wounded or traumatised. They hold memories of past pain and are often kept “exiled” or hidden away by the protectors to spare us the discomfort they carry.
- The Self At the heart of IFS is the concept of the Self – an innate, undamaged core possessing wisdom, compassion, and clarity. IFS supports individuals in accessing this Self to lead their internal family of parts.
- Healing Trauma IFS provides a nurturing framework for engaging with and healing past trauma. It does so by enabling a connection with and understanding of the parts (especially the exiles) that carry those painful experiences.
- Collaboration The goal of IFS is to foster a harmonious relationship between the Self and the various parts. This process enhances self-awareness, nurtures inner harmony, and paves the way for deep healing.
